Drawing Hands
Hands are one of the most difficult parts of the body, they have many movable components, and the shape is far from basic.
In my head, when I was starting drawing, hands meant super advanced drawing skills!! And yes, they are intricate to draw, and that’s one of the reasons why some fashion designers and illustrators rather draw them as simple as possible, or not to draw them at all. But don’t get discouraged, as I always say everything with a step-by-step guide and constant practice can be accomplished 😉
And, in this lesson we are going to do something in between, not too detailed hands as in realistic drawing, nor too simple as abstract drawing 😀
In the series of hand’s videos, I’ll continue with the references of Front, Back, Side, and 3/4, such as with arms. So, for the arm’s front view, you can follow the hand’s video for front, the same for the back and side. And you can follow the 3/4 hand’s video when you draw a 3/4 fashion figure.
What Hand Shape?
The overall hand shape is determined by the length of the palm and fingers. In the hands practice-sheet, there are different dotted rectangles that will help you to practice and draw different hands with different sizes.
The top rectangle is for the Fingers. And the bottom is for the Hand’s Basic Shape (Palm) as mentioned in the videos.
Get some practice!
I like to draw hands with a Short Palm and Short Fingers, sometimes I draw them with a Short Palm and Long Fingers, and I like to make the fingers thicker rather than thin.
What do you like the most?
Don’t worry if you don’t know yet, you will figure it out over the time. As you practice with different shapes, sizes, and proportions for both the fingers and palm, take a second look at your drawings after a couple of hours and make notes of what you like, what you don’t, and what you’d like to try in your next session.
The possibilities are endless, here are some examples of Front and Back views.
Now it’s your turn!
