[Lesson 21] Chiffon – Translucent Fabrics

In this lesson, we’ll cover one of the most beautiful textures and one of my favorite; you’ll see how to render chiffon – or any other kind of translucent fabric.

This is one of the textures that I get asked more often, and it’s because it seems too difficult to try, but actually the steps to create it are super easy – you’ll see 😉

Before Starting

To have a perfect learning-practice day, make sure you are ready:

  1. Gather all your materials, and set them in your favorite place to work with watercolors. Check out the materials list for this lesson below the video.
  2. You can use a square piece of paper like me, or you can use any kind of shape and size.
  3. Determine the colors you want for the fabric.
  4. Put on your earbuds with your favorite music on, and now you’re ready!

Let’s start!

Translucent Fabric

Materials:

Watercolor paper: I used 12cmx12cm 180grs/m2

Watercolors: cerulean blue, magenta, flesh tint, violet, and payne’s gray.

Other: Water, brushes (medium and thin), and a mixing palette.

What do you think, was it easy?

TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT

  1. Read and watch the lesson.
  2. Grab your materials.
  3. Stretch your paper.
  4. And practice painting chiffon and any other translucent fabric – remember to experiment with other colors. Create your own combinations and explore as much as you can, this is key for your progress and improvement 😀

PRO TIP: When you want to create black chiffon, use diluted payne’s gray instead of  concentrated black.
