[Lesson 4] Mixing Colors

Did you get ready to start using watercolors to create your fashion illustrations?

Did you prepare your mindset and your tools as I suggested in the last lesson?

Well, part of the preparation process when you start doing something new is to learn the basics.

Learning the basics of watercolors allows you to use your materials in a successful way, and also it lets you explore further – it allows you to find out new techniques, and add your own spin to how you use this art media.

So far, along this course, you’ve seen part of the basics: I’ve shared with you the materials I use, how to come up with different colors using only three colors (red, yellow, and blue), and how to create a color wheel.

And during this and next lesson, you will see how to mix colors – now using other colors different than red, yellow, and blue -, 24 of my favorite basic techniques, and how to explore with your brushes and layering.

I’m so excited for these lessons and videos because I’ve poured in them ALL the basic stuff that I still use to create my fashion illustrations.

So, if you’re ready, let’s get started with mixing colors!

MIXING COLORS

During the last lesson (and maybe from kindergarten :P) you learned how to mix red, yellow, and blue to create all the beautiful secondary colors (orange, purple, and green), and all the lovely tertiary colors (Violet, Magenta, Ambe, Vermilion, Teal, and Chartreuse)

You realized how from only three colors, you can create other nine colors – at least.

But if you love watercolors like I do, you won’t be satisfied by using only three colors to create your fashion illustrations – NO! – you’ll want the biggest set your day job can afford 😀

So, today is your time to explore with the set you bought – no matter how many colors it has. It’s your time to get familiar with your colors, and the new colors you can create by mixing two, three, or more of them.
