[Bonus Lesson 1] Discovering Your Watercolors
Do you think your watercolor set is limiting you and your creativity to create stunning fashion illustrations?
Well, no more because today you’ll see how to turn your 8 or 12 or 18 watercolor set into a palette of more than two hundred colors. You’ll create a color chart (or maybe several), and you’ll realize the true potential of your watercolors.
Welcome to the first bonus lesson of the challenge WaterColor Study from your course Watercolors for Fashion Illustration.
So many of my students have complained about how limited they feel by their small watercolor sets, and they’re always on the look out for more colors. The truth is that as a beginner, I also experienced the same feelings, and whenever I could I bought a new watercolor tube.
But, you can work with the watercolor set you already have, you don’t have to wait until you purchase more colors to have a wide range of color possibilities for your work.
So, today you’ll create a color chart, which is basically a guide for the colors that you can create with your watercolor set.
Exploring and documenting what colors you can come up with your watercolor set allows you to know the possibilities you have to create your fashion illustrations, textile pattern designs, or paintings. And it’s a great tool when you’re planning a new collection, illustration, or painting.
If you’re ready let’s begin!
Before Starting
To have a perfect learning-practice day, make sure you are ready:
- Gather all your materials, and set them in your favorite place to work with watercolors. Check out the materials list for this lesson below the video.
- Download and print the grids I created for you, or create a grid on your paper with the same number of spaces horizontally and vertically as the number of colors in your watercolor set. For example, if your set has 12 pieces, then create a grid of 12×12 spaces.
- Play your favorite music, and now you’re ready!
Discovering Your Watercolors
Materials:
Watercolor paper: I used 180grs/m2
Printables: These are the grids you can use to create the color charts for 2-color-combinations, 3-color-combinations, and if you’re brave 4-color-combinations 😉
Watercolors: All colors from your watercolor set, it doesn’t matter how many pieces it has.
Other: Water, brushes, and a mixing palette.
What do you think, was it easy?
How long did you take? Did you find new and gorgeous colors?
