Your Deep Why + Materials
Today’s lesson is divided by two: part one is What’s your deep why? And what’s holding you back? and part two is Materials you will need.
More than a lesson is a prep day to get you started, to gather everything you need, and maybe to abandon if fashion illustration is not your thing.
So, let’s jump in!
What’s your Deep Why? And what’s holding you back?
Every dream that comes true, and every goal that is accomplished starts, continues, and it’s completed with a deep why in mind.
A deep why is the reason you accomplish something or not. A deep why comes from the heart and sticks into the mind until your make your dream happen. A deep why will guide you when you’re lost, and it will persuade you to continue when you’re tired.
When you want to accomplish something, if you don’t have a reason that is connected to your core, you won’t get anywhere.
So, if you want to make big and beautiful things happen you need a deep why for each of them.
Now, I know you’re here because you want to become a fashion illustrator or a fashion designer – or both. But I want to know what’s the deep why behind that.
For me as a designer my deep why is:
- Bringing joy, vibrancy, and genuineness through my designs by pouring my heart and soul into my creations.
Sharing and creating at Fashion Step-by-Step my deep why is:
- Serving and helping you build a fulfilling life and business by doing what you love.
And a deeper why for both of them would be:
- Because I love people’s smiles and happy emails. It makes me feel accomplished, fulfilled, and happy.
How to Craft your Deep Why?
Ask and ask yourself again
- Start asking yourself why do I want to become a fashion illustrator (or designer)?
- And when you respond, ask yourself why? again.
- Continue until your answer comes from your heart until your answer means something bigger and higher than just I love fashion, and until you’re convinced and happy about your answer.
Be aware of what you feel
Be aware of your feelings and emotions with each response you give yourself.
I believe all the answers (to anything) are within us, and that our feelings and emotions are the roadmap that will guide us to our answers. That’s why for this exercise I encourage you to be aware of what you feel at every moment, so that when you feel joyful and thrilled you know you’re getting closer to finding your deep why.
You will know
If you let yourself be guided by your feelings and emotions, I’m certain you will know when you find your deep why.
You will know because it’s an indescribable feeling, it is kind of an awakening, it is like you realize you have a PURPOSE, and that is meaningful and goes beyond a mere desire.
Now let’s talk about what’s holding you back
Your deep why will help you and support you along the way, but you need to acknowledge what’s getting in your way now, so you can fix it and you can start building momentum.
What’s holding you back can be different from one stage of your life to another, and it won’t be the same to what’s getting in the way of another person.
It is your job to sit down for a minute and really dig deep into what is blocking your way NOW. Is it a fear, is it a feeling, is it something more real?
Some of the blocks I’ve had (and that get back, depending on the phase of my life or my mood), are:
- Comparison
- Perfectionism
- What if (s)?
- I’m not ready yet feeling
- Something more real like I actually can’t figure out how to do something
- I don’t have time feeling, and sometimes is real
The solution will depend on what is holding you back. But, here I show you what I do to get rid of those pain-in-the-butt blocks, and you can do the same:
- Realize if the block is a fear, a feeling, or something real.
- If the block is a fear or a feeling, get to the root of them, what is it that scares you the most? What’s making you feel uncomfortable? – You’re not alone, you can actually tell me what it is 😉
- Now, ask yourself how does it look happening to you? What is the worse that could happen?
- Think about how this worst case scenario could affect your life, your body, your integrity… Is it possible that you could never start again? Is it actually dangerous?
- And now it’s time to realize if this fear and its consequences are real or not, if they’re dangerous or not. If not, free yourself!
- If the block is something real figure out what you can do NOW to start overcoming it. Think of the smallest thing you could do today to get rid of that block, and do it.
I know fears can kick us in the butt sometimes, but it is up to us to let them do it or to kick them ourselves.
Now I feel more fearful to keep in the same place than moving and doing what someday was ultra scary. And maybe, that’s another question you can ask yourself: what does scare you the most, keeping in the same place or the imaginary worst case scenario? 😉
