Drawing Garments on the Fashion Figure
How did you go with drawing flat garments? Did you draw the flat version of your source of inspiration?
Wow, we’re getting closer to finishing your simple fashion illustration! I’m super excited, can’t wait to see your work!
Okay, now that you’ve practiced drawing flat garments, you’re about to draw your outfit on the fashion figure. Are you ready?
Drawing Garments on the Fashion Figure
To draw the garments on the body, you can follow the same process we saw on the last lesson:
- Outline the garment. Without worrying about anything else, outline your complete garment. If it’s a top, that means you have to draw the shoulders, neckline or collar, armhole, torso, and sleeves. And if it’s a bottom you have to draw the waistband, legs, and bottom.
- Draw the details. In this step draw every single detail but seams and buttons, draw all pockets, folds, cut-outs, zippers, darts, creases, folds, and gathering.
- Add the seams and buttons. And this is the last step. Also, if you forgot to add anything from step two, you can add it here.
But, this time you have to consider the following things:
- Now, gravity and perspective will affect how garments fit the body and how you draw them.
- The clothing should respond to the movement of your fashion figures and their postures.
- Details above the waist should follow the shoulder direction. And below the waist, they should follow the hip direction.
- All clothes should reflect the cylindrical shape of the body, such as the arms, torso, and legs.
- And, most garments fit with some ease to the body, unless the fabric is tight.
Today I have three videos for you, with three outfits to show you how to draw different kinds of garments on different kinds of postures.
